Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College established in 1961, JGEC is the second oldest of all technical institutions beside the Bengal Engineering and Science University(formerly Bengal Engineering College,Shibpur) in the state of West Bengal. At the time of its inception,JGEC was affliated to the Calcutta University.For the period between 1963 and 1999,the college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal, which handed over the rich mantle of technical excellence to the West Bengal University Of Technology, founded under the West Bengal University Of Technology Act,2000. The nearest airport, Bagdogra, is only 65 km from the college campus. Admission is done through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) conducted by the Joint Examination Admissions Board (JEXAB). The college is affliated to the West Bengal University of Technology.

The Gymnasium on campus is state-of-the-art, with instruments like the Treadmill, the Hand Pulley, the Chain Pulley, the Leg Pace, the Butterfly etc. The college has a video conferencing facility with utilities like, LCD Projector (XGA), Interactive Digital Whiteboard, 3 BRI ISDN module, 29" color TV, Amplifier with dual speakers and Desktop visualizer. There are five hostels on campus to accommodate about 75% of the students studying here.
